1994年，美国著名导演奥利佛·斯通经过改编将昆汀·塔伦蒂诺的剧本《天生杀人狂》搬上银幕。这部电影由于其中对暴力的渲染和对美国新闻媒体的讽刺迅速引起了极大的争议。影片讲述一对杀人狂魔横行全美，杀父杀母、滥杀无辜并以此为乐，被警察千辛万苦抓进监狱又奇迹般地逃出来并过上了普通人的安乐生活。
《天生杀人狂》是一部令许多人费解的电影，首先是因为影片的摄影手法，大量黑白镜头与彩色镜头快速、毫无规律的互接令人目眩不已。相对于片中的彩色镜头，黑白镜头表示角色的视角、内心，也代表回忆；与彩色镜头的混接给人一种错乱的感觉。影片共有3000多个镜头，斯通用快速切换的方式把血腥、暴力场面进行分解和弱化。画面大部分是倾斜的，经常穿插的闪回镜头以及一些看似与影片内容无关的画面。
影片在叙述方式上也是多种形式混杂，包括纪录片、访谈、电视播报、电视肥皂剧、动画片等等。片中斯通用了多种叙事，当然是有其目的的，如肥皂剧讲述梅乐莉与米基的故事是对把凶杀和家庭丑剧当乐趣的大众的讽刺，电视播报、动画片等是为了让影片有一种真假难辨、魔幻般的氛围。至于片中所表现的美国社会的种种光怪陆离的现象和令人触目惊心的暴力血腥场面经过了摄影手段及叙述方式的处理后更使《天生杀人狂》像一个电影怪物。
